Fight Fire Costs for Dave & Alonso

Organized by Kim Usey

All done, and thank you!
Amazing, wonderful, faith-in-humanity-restoring kindness and generosity.
Final week
So after that amazing initial outburst of caring and generosity, we gave some thought to wrapping up this ChipIn two weeks early. But folks were ... are ... still chipping in, and at this point there's just a week left. I've gotten a couple of e-mails from people who were waiting to give until they themselves got a paycheck, so I'm going to leave it for the full time just to ensure that some people who wanted to be part of the ChipIn have that opportunity. If you know of anyone who wanted to do it but had to hold off, let them know that there's still a week to go.

Though at this point, I can't ask for more from anyone! This incredible response will really help Alonso and Dave take less of a hit from the arsonist. I'm shaking my head in awe of what you all have done.
Alonso and Dave speak! (i.e., Linoleum Knife thank-you)
Dave and Alonso kick off their January 8 Linoleum Knife podcast by grappling with gratitude and the kindness of strangers. Anyone who objects to being labeled a "mensch" can take solace in also being labeled "rad."

And also from Alonso...
posted by Alonso just now:

Still finding my words, and owing many thank-you notes, but I just wanted to let everyone know how flabbergasted I am by the generosity of friends (and strangers, even) in our time of need. You make me less cynical and more inclined to buy into Frank Capra.

Alonso and I knew our friends were great, but we never knew how great until this week. And even you strangers, you're great too. The tidal wave of generosity is still blowing my mind. You all get pancakes. And if you live out of town or we don't know you, then you'll have to come knock on our door--preferably not at 2AM yelling "FIRE!"--but you'll still get pancakes.
Chipping In for Alonso & Dave: Why, Reposted

That is Alonso's car in the L.A. Times main news photo about this one-night 20-incident arson outbreak that caught our dear friends' vehicles in its flames. Here's the main news story itself:http://www.latimes.com/news/local/la-me-hollywood-arson-fires-20111231,0,3813815.story.

Their apartment didn't burn, but is filled with smoke smell and will take some TLC to get back to normal as well.

One of their two cars was insured, the other wasn't. They each need a car to be able to get around L.A. for work. It's been a rough year for freelance writers and critics, and our guys have been working hard to keep everything going. Any little bit that any of us might be able to, well, chip in will help them replace and repair and restore.

Dave & Alonso have so very many friends, and already so many have wanted to help. I'm just another one of those friends (having counted Alonso among my best friends for the last 25 years), and I'm setting this ChipIn up not at their request but with their permission. I'm using Dave's PayPal address for the donations so everything will just go straight to the guys. If you have any questions for me or about this, please e-mail me at kimusey using my gmail dot cm account (you all can parse that, right?).

I'm kicking it off with a little something, and I'm sending it out into the world. I hope you can do the same, and do the same.
Another car insurance clarification
I've only seen one person take issue with this ChipIn campaign, and while I'm working on letting things go, I have to say a little something so folks will understand.

As Dave noted on Facebook, his 2002 Mazda had comprehensive insurance that will give him book value on that car (look that up). Alonso's 1998 VW had liability insurance but was not covered for nutjob arsonists. Replacing two cars with that one small insurance check, even with careful shopping of used car sales, wasn't ever going to happen.

My dear friends work hard, make many sacrifices, and are all-around great guys who didn't deserve this big random financial hit. And that's why I started this. I imagine that's why a lot of you have wanted to do what you could too.
Gobsmacked
I've been keeping Dave and Alonso in the loop about the amazing response and awesome comments and just overall goodness-of-folks, and I don't think I'm talking out of turn to let you know that they are overwhelmed (Dave's word) and verklempt (Alonso's) and in awe of y'all's generosity and caring. *I* knew that starting a ChipIn for them would yield this kind of emotional, moral, and financial support, but I don't think the guys quite realized that the entire town of Bedford Falls would show up in their living room.
Car insurance clarification
The second car was insured as required but not covered for *this*. So a major loss.

Finally, there's already another Facebook-oriented effort that just sends you directly to Dave's PayPal address; find that info on Alonso's Facebook page. It's just as legit as this, and just another way that friends are reaching out to help.
